Project / self-hosting

ouroboros

A self-hosting compiler for EigenScript, written in EigenScript — source to the C VM’s exact bytecode, run on the same engine and JIT. The language reproduces its entire toolchain.

Bootstrap fixed point

The compiler compiles itself.

The fully self-hosted compiler reproduces its own front-end, its own codegen, and a test program byte-for-byte. That is the bootstrap fixed point: input the compiler to itself, and recover the exact bytecode output.

InputEigenScript source is processed by a compiler written in EigenScript.
OutputThe result is the C VM’s exact bytecode, running on the same engine and JIT.
OracleEvery program is diffed against the C evaluator through a behavioral-parity oracle.
Second pathA native AOT path takes AST to C and is checked byte-for-byte against the VM as oracle.

Self-hosting as a forcing function.

ouroboros is not a separate language experiment. It is a severe test of the language’s own semantics: the compiler must describe, evaluate, and reproduce the toolchain it depends on. The result connects the runtime’s documented contract to an executable, byte-exact test.

FRONT-END

The self-hosted compiler reproduces its own front-end as part of the fixed point.

CODEGEN

Generated output is compared with the C evaluator’s behavior and exact bytecode.

ENGINE

Both compiler and generated program run on EigenScript’s engine and JIT.

CONTRACT

Parity checks turn the established evaluator into an oracle for the self-hosted path.
